Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly ready to loan out Billy Gilmour in January, with Villarreal leading the chase to sign the Scottish wonderkid just months after Everton and Rangers missed out on the midfielder.

According to the Times, the Seagulls are exploring options to aid Gilmour’s development, with the 16-cap Scottish international hardly featuring for Brighton this season following his permanent move to the south coast from Chelsea, with Everton and Rangers both missing out on the youngster.

TalkSport reported that Frank Lampard was keen to reunite with Gilmour at Goodison Park, whilst according to the Athletic, the midfielder has remained on Rangers’ watch list ever since the talent left Glasgow in 2017 to sign for Chelsea’s academy.

With Graham Potter leaving Brighton just weeks after signing Gilmour, it’s perhaps no real surprise that there is now talk of the Seagulls loaning out the midfielder, with the 21-year-old seemingly not ready yet to play regular Premier League football for a top club.

Gilmour spent last season out on loan with Norwich City to disastrous effect, with the midfielder being slated by fans and pundits for his performances as the Canaries were relegated straight back down to the Championship with a 20th-place finish.

Indeed, Gilmour might be thinking now that snubbing Everton or Rangers might have been a poor decision given how differently the youngster would have been treated. However, being sent out on loan to Spain could be the beginning of something great for the playmaker.

Gilmour’s style of play means that a move to Spain feels like a logical decision for the Scottish youngster, with Villarreal also a club that could help get the best out of the midfielder, who has felt somewhat lost in the past 12 months after two seemingly poor career choices.

Whilst there’s no telling how Gilmour will do, the Brighton youngster heading out to Spain could be a masterstroke of a move from the south coast side, with La Liga the perfect division for the midfielder to showcase his talents and to get regular playing time in a top league.
