Tony Adams has suggested to Stadium Astro that Arsenal should have signed Liverpool defender Joe Gomez when he was a youngster.

Arsenal have brought in some talented prospects like Martin Odegaard of late, but Adams has questioned whether he was actually necessary purchase.

With Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli coming through, Arsenal already have good options going forward breaking through in their ranks.

But Adams has questioned why youngsters like Matty Cash at Aston Villa and Liverpool’s Gomez weren’t on the Gunners’ radar.

“For me, as a sports director, you kind of spot your weaknesses,” he said.

“Where are the kids coming through? Okay, we’re going to have to leave room there – because we have some real talent.

“You have to give the kids an opportunity. Where we’ve done wrong, is we haven’t pin pointed areas of recruitment.

“I love Cash at Villa for instance, he’s a Londoner. Gomez is another Londoner! He’s a wonderful football, one of the best centre-backs in the country. Those kind of kids.”

Gomez, of course, could have presented an excellent signing for Arsenal, if they had bought him from Charlton Athletic like Liverpool did.

However, their chance of landing the England international has surely gone now.

Gomez is currently out with a severe knee injury, but he is now a very important part of Liverpool’s team.

Cash, meanwhile, may be an attainable target – but they would have to pay a sizeable fee before Villa would even consider letting him go.
