Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly keen to sign centre-back Willy Boly on a permanent basis from Primeira Liga giants FC Porto.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have pulled off some pretty impressive deals since Chinese owners Fosun International and super-agent Jorge Mendes started pulling the strings at Molineux in the summer of 2016.
Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro and Ruben Neves have certainly been worthy of their club-record transfer fees while Diego Jota and Leo Bonatini, who have scored 22 and assisted another nine between them this season, are also set to sign permanently after starring on loan from Porto and Al-Hilal respectively.
But the best deal could be yet to come. According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Wolves can turn Willy Boly’s loan from Primeira Liga giants Porto into a permanent deal to the tune of £10.6 million.
And it almost goes without saying that such a fee is a snip in today’s market – even if it would make the Frenchman the most expensive defender in the history of England’s second tier.
While Jota, Bonatini and Neves have been so influential at the other end of the pitch, Wolves’ lead at the top of the Championship may not have been quite so clear if it wasn’t for Boly’s performances at the back.
In the 16 league games he has started, Wolves have kept ten clean sheets. And it is no coincidence that they conceded a goal almost immediately after he hobbled off injured in the 2-2 Boxing Day draw with Millwall.
Quite simply, Boly is the best defender in the Championship right now and Wolves would be foolish not to snap him up at the first opportunity – even if they could have signed him for half-price when he was at Braga a year-and-a-half ago.
