The Robins will face Wolves on Sunday with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bristol City manager Lee Johnson is feeling quite bullish about his side’s hopes of pulling off a giant-killing.

The Robins face Wolves for the first time since their dramatic Championship clash on 30 December 2017 at Ashton Gate, the visitors scoring a 94th-minute goal through Ryan Bennett for a 2-1 win.

During that game, a player from each side was sent off, while Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was banished to the stands for impeding on the Robins’ technical area.

In an interview with Sky Sports News, Johnson stressed this will be a different game with different players, and didn’t think history would have any bearing on Sunday’s encounter.

However, he did add that, while Wolves have done well in the league and cup, City have also got as far as they have on merit and feel they can compete with the Premier League high-flyers.

“This is a showpiece game and we are here on merit,” said Johnson. “It’s against a good side in Wolves but we genuinely feel that we are a good side and that we can compete against a top 10 Premier League side and it’s up to us to prove it.

“They’ve proved it already, by getting promoted and performing very well and, at this point, we’re the hunter, if you like, and it’s important that we keep in that mode because whether it be the league or the cup, this club generally performs better as the underdog.”

City saw off Huddersfield Town in the third round and beat Bolton in the next to book a tie with Wolves, while Sunday’s visitors at Ashton Gate reached the fifth round by overcoming Liverpool before seeing off Shrewsbury, albeit needing a replay to do so.
