Wolves wanted Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths in the summer; fresh bid should be considered for January

Wolverhampton Wanderers were linked with a move for Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths in the summer.

According to a recent report from The Sun on Sunday (print edition; 3rd December 2017; page 65), Wolves are looking to boost their striker options during the January transfer window and have identified Derby’s Chris Martin as their number one target.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are flying in the Championship right now and are situated 10 points clear of the sides outside the automatic-promotion spots, so it almost seems inevitable that they will go on and seal promotion to the Premier League.

Wolves have shown with the acquisitions of Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota that they have a huge amount of ambition driving this current project, and thus, it could be argued that they should be targeting a much more prolific striker than Martin – who has scored just one goal in the league all season.

So perhaps Wolves should have a look at a striker that they have previously had on their books and were considering trying to bring back to Molineux in the summer.

The Sun (print edition; 24th May 2017; page 72) reported that Wolves were rivalling Leeds for Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths after his stunning spell at Parkhead.

At the time, it would have seemed an incredibly ambitious bid. Celtic had booked their ticket to the Champions League once again and had clinched the domestic treble, while Wolves ended an unspectacular season languishing in mid-table in England’s second tier.

Heading into this window however, Wolves look nailed on to be a Premier League side next season and Griffiths is fighting for minutes with Brendan Rodgers’ side, with Odsonne Edouard proving his credentials in the last couple of games while Moussa Dembele appears to be the current first choice.

Griffiths has previously struggled to hide his frustration when he has been taken off so it would be no surprise if he was somewhat unhappy with Edouard threatening to push him further down the pecking order.

And with Celtic clearly too good for the rest of the sides in Scotland but not good enough to make a major impact in the Champions League, the opportunity to join a side seemingly destined for the Premier League may perhaps tempt him to consider his future.

If Wolves did decide to reignite their interest in Griffiths and managed to bring him back to Molineux, it would arguably be an excellent piece of business given that the 27-year-old boasts an extremely impressive strike-rate at every club he has played for.

Griffiths may well be determined to win his place back at Celtic, but perhaps Wolves should try their luck in the hope that a January deal seems to suit all parties.
