Wolves want Wycombe’s Aaron Pierre – but he’s not what Paul Lambert needs

Lambert is targeting experience in January but he’s hardly going to get that from a 23-year-old in League Two.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Wycombe defender Aaron Pierre, as reported by HITC earlier this week, but is he the right man to solve Paul Lambert’s defensive concerns?

Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Cardiff City once again reinforced the notion that, if Wolves are to stand any chance of pushing away from the relegation zone over the coming weeks, they need to sign and sign well in the January transfer market.

Since Lambert has taken charge, Wolves have conceded six goals in just two home games, gifting Sheffield Wednesday the win at Molineux before letting in four in their topsy-turvy draw with Fulham at the weekend.

As such, the former Aston Villa boss has frequently lamented the lack of experience and Championship nous within his squad, particularly with 21-year-old duo Kortney Hause and Dominic Iorfa flailing badly in the backline.

“Ideally we’ve got to get one or two who know the league,” Lambert told the Express and Star after the Wednesday defeat.

“I think the group needs a bit of help. They’re a young team – if you look at the back four on Saturday there are two young lads from England Under-21s.”

The long-awaited return of 33-year-old former Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson from injury will prove a huge boost to Lambert’s resources though, after over a year on the sidelines, he can hardly be expected to string together an immediate run of games over a hectic Christmas period.

Therefore, Wolves’ reported interest in Pierre, a 23-year-old without a single second tier appearance to his name, hardly fits Lambert’s specifications.

Though a talented centre-half, one of the best in League Two, Wolves need an old-head, a well-practised professional to guide their young defenders through the most testing period of their careers.
