Herculez Gomez says he can see Wolves securing the transfer of Chivas and Mexico forward, Alexis Vega, but he can’t see him joining Chelsea.

The Futbol Americas expert and former USA international also added how Vega was ‘disrespected’ by Aston Villa goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, at the Qatar World Cup.

Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 during the group stages, and at one point in the game, Vega’s curling free-kick wasn’t just saved by the Villa man, but he proceeded to catch it like it was practice.

For Mexico and Vega, it proved to be a World Cup to forget, as the now-departed Tata Martino watched his side produce one of the worst performances in the nation’s history on football’s biggest stage.

But, for Gomez, the sought-after star Vega was one of the bright sparks, as he was asked whether he could see him securing a transfer to Wolves or Chelsea, as he told ESPN.

“Wolves? Yeah!” replied Gomez. “That’s a relegation-battling team. “I think Alexis Vega has a few things over than a lot of the Mexican pool (of players).

“He has great technical ability and he can play football at the rate of a modern game. With speed, power, directness and verticality. He does these things very well. He takes as much joy in assisting, then he does in scoring. He’s exciting, strong, really strong, deceivingly strong for his size.

“I think he would be a good relegation battle type of player. I don’t see him going to Chelsea. I don’t see a Chelsea going for an Alexis Vega. Do you see him playing over Ziyech? And he barely plays there.

“For Mexico, I think he had one of the better World Cups – you go back to that Argentina (game) that Dibu Martinez literally caught from a free-kick. He literally caught the ball. That’s the most disrespectful thing you can do if you are hitting a ball.

“I am a huge fan of Alexis Vega, but he didn’t quite show you anything at this World Cup, where if you are an international scout if you are Chelsea, you’re not jumping out of your seating saying ‘we have to sign him’.”

WOLVES NEED GOALS

It has been a season to forget for Wolves, so far, and they are deservedly sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table.

This break for the World Cup has probably done them the world of good because it would have allowed them to re-group, but most importantly, given new boss Julen Lopetegui the chance to work with the players on the training field.

But regardless of how much work he does, there probably needs to be some sort of investment in the centre-forward area because, with only eight goals scored this season, that’s the lowest in the Premier League and someone like Erling Haaland bagged that amount in one week.
