Wolves to beat Aston Villa & Leeds to £42m target Matheus Cunha

Wolves are reportedly set to beat the likes of Aston Villa and Leeds United to the signing of Atletico Madrid attacker Matheus Cunha, who has been linked with a move away from the La Liga giants for some time.

According to Cadena Ser, the Premier League side have a deal in place to sign Cunha in the January transfer window, with Julen Lopetegui seemingly already working hard behind the scenes to improve major areas in his new squad via the winter market.

A lack of goals have been a killer for Wolves this season, with Raul Jimenez yet to recapture his pre-injury form and Diego Costa, unsurprisingly, looking well past his best. Sasa Kalajdzic’s long-term injury has also done little to help matters for the Molineux side.

Yet Lopetegui is already working his magic if this report is to be believed, with Cunha a player who has recently been linked to Villa as well as the likes of Manchester United and Leeds according to Talk Sport, with Atletico unlikely to recoup much of the £42m the Spanish side spent on the forward.

Indeed, Wolves signing Cunha will come as a surprise to many given how poorly the Premier League side have performed this season. Especially with some big clubs in the division, such as Villa and Leeds, being linked to the 23-year-old attacker.

Once hailed as ‘extraordinary’, Cunha could have a massive impact on Wolves if the deal is able to go through in the coming days. And for Leeds and Unai Emery’s Villa, there will be a feeling of missing out on something great despite how poor the forward has been over the past 18 months with Atletico.

Wolves signing Cunha will catch everyone by surprise

Lopetegui has quite the task on his hands in January in trying to rebuild Wolves’ squad whilst also trying to keep hold of key players like Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto. Yet retaining such names and adding the likes of Cunha will be quite the move from the former Sevilla manager.

After all, the South American forward was once one of the most sought-after attackers in all of Europe. And whilst Cunha’s form has been lacklustre at best this season, the forward has the potential to unlock his true quality with a move to Wolves, much to the dismay of Leeds and Villa.
