Carlos Salcedo is set to leave Mexican outfit Tigres this week amid interest from Premier League high-flyers Wolverhampton Wanderers, manager Miguel Herrera tells Futbol Total.

Cash your mind back to February 2016.

Manchester United were in the midst of a debilitating injury crisis and, with his players dropping like flies, Louis van Gaal felt he had no choice but to throw an 18-year-old by the name of Marcus Rashford in at the deep end.

In the space of three days, Rashford went from unknown quantity to the talk of the town.

He followed up a debut brace against Midtjylland in the Europa League with two more goals – and an assist to boot – in a topsy-turvy victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The rest, as they say, is history.

And who knows, perhaps one day soon, Wolves fans will be looking back at January 2022 as the dawn of Toti Gomes’ Molineux career.

Returning ahead of schedule from a loan spell at Swiss outfit Grasshopper, the 23-year-old defender has slotted in brilliantly during the absences of Romain Saiss and Willy Boly.

Gomes’ sudden emergence will not stop Wolves scouring the market for defensive reinforcements however.

Nikola Milenkovic, Duje Caleta-Car and the much-admired Sven Botman seem unlikely to arrive this month.

But do not rule out a deal for a man who plays alongside Raul Jimenez in the Mexican national team.

Is Carlos Salcedo heading to Wolves?

Media Tempo claim that Wolves are keen on former Fiorentina and Eintracht Frankfurt stopper Salcedo.

What’s more, the 28-year-old is available for a bargain £3 million with less than 12 months to run on his Tigres contract.

“I am not going to bring in a player who is not thinking about the team,” explains Herrera.

Salcedo was dropped for Tigres’ 2-1 Liga MX victory over Pumas UNAM on Sunday.

“We have to keep the team focused. If there is an offer for him, it is being analysed,” Herrera adds.

“But I need those who are thinking about the team. The offers came and he is a little unfocused. I want a player who wants to die for Tigres and to win.

“(His exit) should be finalised this week. And I told him that, if it doesn’t happen, he has to concentrate (on the team).”

Salcedo, who has 48 caps for his country, could also move to the MLS.

Toronto FC want the much-travelled defender to join marquee signing Lorenzo Insigne in Canada.
