Chinese superstar Wu Lei has been quoted by the Daily Nation as saying that he wants to leave Shanghai SIPG to play abroad – just months after being linked with a move to Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 27-year-old has been dubbed the ‘Chinese Maradona’ as he continues to take the Chinese Super League by storm. Indeed, in the 2018 season Wu Lei has scored 29 goals in 41 games, as well as providing 12 assists.

The 57-time China international stars for Vitor Pereira’s team alongside Brazilian stars Hulk and Oscar, which saw the Express & Star report back in the summer that Wolves were keen on the Chinese ace.

Wu Lei has been repeatedly linked with a move abroad and now Wolves may have received a boost in their pursuit of the attack – if they remain keen – as he has stated that he is open to leaving China.

“(But) first of all, at my age, if I go abroad I must play, this is very important,” Wu said. “In the right environment I can really improve and I can help the national team when I come back. I think it depends on the timing and various other factors.”

Wu has only ever played for Shanghai SIPG, clocking up 344 appearances in all competitions and amassing an incredible ratio of one goal every two games with 169 strikes.

He has a contract until December 2020 so a move would see Wolves have to pay a transfer fee. However, with Wu looking to move abroad and cash-rich Wolves more than active in the transfer window, a deal could be agreed.
