Wolverhampton Wanderers wanted Preston North End striker Jordan Hugill during the summer, and he impressed at Molineux at the weekend.

While clubs will undoubtedly love to see their transfer targets shine as they weigh up whether to make a move, Wolves would have unquestionably preferred to see Jordan Hugill have an off-day at the weekend.

Hugill was on Wolves’ radar during the summer, with Sky Sports reporting in August that the Championship leaders and Reading both made £8 million bids for the Preston North End striker, prompting the 25-year-old to hand in a transfer request at Deepdale.

Of course, the forward would remain with the Lilywhites, and he had a great chance to prove that Wolves should have tried harder to bring him in during the previous window as Preston travelled to face Nuno Espirito Santo’s men at the weekend.

And while Hugill’s team were on the losing side, there is undoubtedly an argument to suggest that the striker did a very good job of proving to Wolves that he could have been an asset during their promotion charge.

He created an early chance for the away side as a brilliant sliding challenge resulted in an opportunity which Daniel Johnson should have arguably converted.

In the second-half, Hugill would get on the scoresheet as his excellent header left John Ruddy with absolutely no chance and gave Preston a slight glimmer of hope that they would ultimately not be able to capitalise upon.

And if Wolves plan to make a fresh move for the forward in January, then you would imagine that Hugill’s showing at Molineux, in conjunction with his recent form – he has scored four times in his last six games – would have surely done a good job of convincing Nuno that he could be beneficial as they look to remain at the division’s summit.
