Ruben Neves has raved about Liverpool star Thiago in an interview with The Athletic, claiming the midfielder is “physically” one of the toughest players he has faced. He also raved about the Spaniard’s intelligence.
Thiago, 30, has endured another season blighted by injury – which has prevented the Spain international from making more than just 23 appearances in all competitions. Last term, he managed just 30 games.
A calf injury, a hip problem and then a positive Covid-19 test have been the reason for Thiago missing 10 of the 12 league games he has been absent for. But he still remains a crucial part of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Speaking about his toughest opponents, Portugal and Wolves midfielder Neves identified Thiago as a “smart” player that is “physically” one of the toughest he has come up against. Similarly, his quality is up there.
“I will also say one from the Premier League — Thiago (now of Liverpool). When I played against Xabi Alonso (at Bayern), Thiago was there as well. That was a hard game. Thiago is one of the hardest. So smart.
“Quality, physicality, he’s one of the best. I can say N’Golo Kante (of Chelsea) as well. But my first choice would be Thiago,” Neves told The Athletic, when asked for his toughest opponents.

Many will point to his backpass that almost saw Martin Odegaard score. But Thiago proved the game’s decisive moment, perfectly picking out Diogo Jota to open the scoring. His weight of pass and decision making were perfect.
Thiago might not be the best in the air, he might not work as hard as the likes of Fabinho or Jordan Henderson – but he has incredible awareness, passing and technically, he is one of the most-gifted midfielders around.
Liverpool need Thiago to be firing on all cylinders, as well as a number of other players, if they are to leapfrog Manchester City in the title race.
