Doherty joined Wolves at the tender age of just 18.
Matt Doherty has told the Daily Mail in a candid interview that he had a trial at Celtic during his teenage years before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2010.
The 26-year-old right-back has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season, even winning the Player of the Month award for September after providing assists in wins over Burnley and Southampton.
He has continued his form this month, scoring the winner against Crystal Palace as Wolves continue to defy the odds and sit in a lofty tenth place – conceding only nine goals in 10 league games.
Docherty spoke of his difficulty at getting into professional football, and even revealed that he had a trial with Scottish champions Celtic at the age of 15 as well as Sunderland, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough.
“I went to a lot of clubs and didn’t perform – Middlesbrough, Celtic, Sunderland, Portsmouth, when they were in the Premier League.”Doherty said.
A three-time Ireland international, Doherty is one of the best right-backs in British football now – and Celtic are certainly struggling in that area.
