The 21-year-old has been hugely impressive for the Championship side in recent times.

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dominic Iorfa believes that Gareth Southgate’s promotion could boost his own hopes of being called up to the full England side, the Express and Star reports.

Current under-21 manager Southgate has been appointed as caretaker boss of the national team following Sam Allardyce’s departure.

And Iorfa – who has received a handful of caps for the under-21s under Southgate – has agreed that the retired defender’s new role gives him a greater chance of graduating to the full Three Lions team in the near future.

“The fact [Southgate] gave me the opportunity for England under-21s and I’ve played a lot of games, and now he’s gone to the seniors, it does look good on paper,” he told the Express and Star when asked about his chances of receiving a call-up.

“So if I keep my head down and keep doing well, hopefully the opportunity would be there. He’s a nice guy, a good coach, tactically very good, as are the sessions he puts on. I think he’ll do well [with England].”

The 21-year-old has been hugely impressive since his emergence at Molineux, proving equally capable playing at either right-back or in the middle of the back four.

While England look strong on the right of defence – with Kyle Walker and Nathaniel Clyne both vying for the position – it seems much more likely that Iorfa’s chance will come in the centre if he does receive a surprise call-up.

The likes of John Stones and Chris Smalling boast plenty of talent, but there are arguably still question marks over whether the team boasts enough depth in the position.

And if Iorfa can continue to improve in the second tier, he may just find himself amongst the names discussed when Southgate comes to pick a squad.
