Benik Afobe has not had the start he wanted at Wolves.

Benik Afobe came in for criticism from Wolves fans in midweek after a disappointing appearance off the bench against Norwich.

Afobe re-signed for Wolves on loan from Bournemouth in January and he has not had the start he was looking for in his second spell at the club.

There is one major reason why, and that’s a lack of confidence.

When he first signed for Wolves this was his biggest asset.

He was flying after scoring 19 goals for MK Dons in just half a season and carried this on at Wolves.

His form at Molineux led to him earning a move to the Premier League, only to see his progress stall at Bournemouth.

Now back at Wolves, Afobe is in a worse situation than he was when he first signed.

He is lacking confidence, he is not as sharp as he was, and there is far more pressure, with big question marks being raised over where his future may lie.

Wolves fans getting on his back is natural, but it is worth noting that he has not yet been handed a start by Nuno Santo.

He hasn’t necessarily earned it, but Wolves are not going to see the real Afobe until he has the faith of his coach and he starts to believe in himself again.

It may not happen for him in his second spell at the club, but Wolves should know there is a quality player in there if he is in the right circumstances, and it is too early to write him off just yet.
