Wolverhampton Wanderers were reportedly interested in signing Napoli’s Amadou Diawara in the January transfer window.

Football Italia reported back in January that Wolves, along with Fiorentina, were interested in Napoli’s Guinean midfielder Amadou Diawara, according to a report from the Corriere del Mezzogiorno’s print edition.
A deal back then failed to materialise and the 21-year-old stayed in Naples. Diawara was rarely used by Carlo Ancelotti in the centre of Napoli’s midfield but the report claimed that the Partenopei would be willing to sell him for £31 million.
Diawara’s struggles continued since the end of the last transfer window as he started just one game before suffering a muscular injury which ruled him out for the rest of the season. The youngster could still be open to a move away due to lack of playing time and Wolves should try their luck again this summer.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will have to bolster their squad after booking their place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League. A thin squad such as theirs will face a lot of difficulties if they fail to add some depth in the next two months.

Joao Moutinho has been a dream signing for the Wanderers and the Portuguese international played a key part in Wolves’ brilliant campaign. A stunning return of eight assists in his debut season in the Premier League is a remarkable feat but at 33 years of age, he will struggle if used as regularly as he has been.
Diawara would be an ideal long-term replacement for Moutinho and the Guinean international could have a similar impact as the veteran when given regular game time. The 21-year-old possesses all the traits to be a top midfielder in the coming years and a midfield trio of Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker and Diawara would work wonders for the best part of the next decade.
Diawara’ stock is expected to have come down after starting just eight league games and Wolves should take full advantage of the situation with a smart move for him in the coming weeks.
