Nottingham Forest and QPR will challenge Wolverhampton Wanderers for Barnsley’s Josh Scowen – and Wolves have just made room in their team.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ George Saville stood out against former club Chelsea
Though Wolves eventually went down 2-0 at home to Chelsea in January’s FA Cup fourth round tie, the clash was something of a personal victory for George Saville.
The 24-year-old midfielder, who graduated from The Blues’ academy, went some way to answering his many critics with a typically combative and dogged performance in the centre of Paul Lambert’s engine room.
With a number of fans questioning his role in the team, Saville’s excellent display in a televised cup tie could hardly have been better timed. The problem, however, was that the former Brentford midfielder was unable to maintain that level of performance throughout the remainder of the season as Wolves limped to a mid-table finish.
And following the resignation of Lambert, a manager who showed commendable belief in the young midfielder, its little surprise that Saville has been shown the door.
According to London News Online, Saville is set to move to Championship new-boys Millwall town this summer, joining up with fellow Wolves man Jed Wallace, who spent the second half of last season helping The Lions earn promotion from League One.
Though Saville’s exit won’t get too many hands wringing in Wolverhampton, it does leave the club one midfielder short. Therefore, they must move fast to secure a replacement.
Man in demand
Preferably, another tenacious, hard-working and tireless performer who can replicate Saville’s role in the team but play with more consistency and all-round quality. Someone like Josh Scowen.
The Sun claimed recently that the 24-year-old was on Wolves’ radar with his contract at Barnsley expiring this summer. QPR and Nottingham Forest were also in the race.

And Scowen appears to be the ideal replacement, or even an astute upgrade, for the departing Saville. He was one of the most underrated players in the Championship last season, his stand-out performances in the midfield providing a platform for Barnsley to finish happily in mid-table.
And Saville’s sudden departure suggests that Wolves must put themselves in pole position for his like-for-like replacement.
