Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly joined a whole host of clubs in the race to sign the West Bromwich Albion defender.

According to a report from ESPN, Wolves have joined the likes of West Ham and Tottenham in the race to sign West Brom centre-back Ahmed Hegazi this summer, but Nuno Espirito Santo should be wary of parting with the £10 million that it will take to sign the Egyptian this summer.

The 27-year-old joined the Baggies from Al Ahly initially on loan in the summer of 2017, before making his switch to the Hawthorns a permanent one just five months later, and he went on to play every single Premier League game for the Black Country outfit.

It must be taken into account, though, that Hegazi was a key member of a West Brom team that got relegated last season, conceding 56 goals in the process.

Wolves are a club with great ambition now, and they should surely be aiming higher than the Egypt international, especially considering the £10 million price-tag on his head.

Hegazi is a decent defender, that cannot be argued, but with Nuno’s side being backed to finish inside the top 10 this season, is he really a player who will help them reach the next level?

The simple answer to that question is no.

Wolves are certainly not short of funds, but that doesn’t mean that they should be forced into paying over the odds for average talent.

This summer will be a vitally important one for Nuno and Wolves, and signing Hegazi from West Brom would hardly be a statement of intent.

It would reek of a lack of ambition, and that is something that this exciting Wolves side should not be associated with anymore.
