Wolves reunion with Ian Cathro ruled out by Molineux boss Nuno Espirito Santo

Cathro has worked with the Wolverhampton Wanderers boss as two former clubs.

Sacked Hearts boss Ian Cathro will not be coming to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It was claimed by former Wolves midfielder Alex Rae – on the day of Cathro’s departure – that the 31-year-old had visited Molineux and was being lined up for a role on Nuno’s coaching team.

The Scottish Sun later explained that Cathro was down in the Black Country looking for players, and is now reporting he returned a day after his sacking.

But Nuno, who did his coaching badges alongside the Dundee native and worked with him at Rio Ave and Valencia, has told the tabloid there are no immediate plans for a reunion at Wolves.

“I have known Ian for a long, long, time. Unfortunately he is no longer in the job at Hearts,” the Portuguese said.

“But he was only here to visit me as a friend.”

A fluent Portuguese speaker, Cathro’s presence could have come in handy at Wolves, after the arrivals of Ruben Neves, Diego Jota, Roderick Miranda, Leo Bonatini and Nuno this summer.

The former Newcastle United assistant coach also helped to develop another of Wanderers’ new recruits, Barry Douglas, at Dundee United.

Meanwhile, Cathro’s old Newcastle boss Steve McClaren has emerged as one of the favourites to succeed him at Hearts.
