Have Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers missed the boat with Steven Bergwijn signing a new contract with the Eredivisie giants?
Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of the few Premier League teams Steven Bergwijn hasn’t been linked with since exploding onto the scene with PSV Eindhoven. Until now, of course.
Regularly mentioned as a target for Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Everton, El Desmarque claims that Wolves too are long-time admirers of a fleet-footed Dutch international who has won three Eredivisie titles already at the age of just 21.
PSV wanted £35 million for their prized asset. But they’ll have to make do with keeping arguably the most gifted attacker in Holland for another few years with Bergwijn signing a new contract until 2023. Not a bad consolation.
“Steven has exceptional qualities and we were desperate to keep him at the Philips Stadion. I am delighted he has penned a new deal,” manager Mark Van Bommel told the club’s official website.
No wonder Van Bommel is delighted. A two-footed winger who started the Nations League final as Holland lost to Portugal, Bergwijn also produced 15 goals and 13 assists in all competitions during Van Bommel’s first season at the helm of PSV.
Wolves might have missed the boat, then, with Bergwijn’s rapid rise surely set to catch the eye of Europe’s bonafide giants in the next 12 months or so.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have gone from 15th in the Championship to seventh in the Premier League in two years but they’re not Real Madrid or Juventus just yet.
