Wolves have signed Leander Dendoncker, but having been previously linked with West Ham was he actually just what the Hammers needed?
Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed the signing of Leander Dendoncker, bringing in the Anderlecht midfielder on a season long loan.
Dendoncker flew into England on Wednesday (August 8) to discuss personal terms with Wolves and undergo his medical ahead of finally completing a move to the Premier League.
The 23-year-old was linked with a deadline day switch to West Ham United during the January transfer window last season, but Sky Sports reports the deal could not be completed before it closed.
Just what the Hammers need
What must be particularly frustrating seeing Dendoncker now make the move to their newly promoted top tier rivals is that the Belgium international is arguably exactly what West Ham need.
The Evening Standard recently reported that Manuel Pellegrini was keen to replace Cheikhou Kouyate with another holding midfielder following his switch to Crystal Palace – although they did manage to find a replacement on deadline day, bringing in Carlos Sanchez from Fiorentina.
This is precisely the role that Dendoncker plays for both club and country, sitting in front of the defence and breaking up play before distributing it.
Now that same tactic could be used against the East Londoners when they travel to Molineux this season and while Sanchez will plug the gap, have they missed out on the better player?
