Carlos Carvalhal has been sacked by Abu Dhabi outfit Al Wahda amid reports suggesting the former Swansea City boss could return to the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers, as confirmed by the club’s official Twitter page.

With Ruben Amorim, Sergio Conceicao and Pedro Martins also in the picture, Carvalhal is unlikely to be at the top of many Wolves fans’ wishlists. What he lacks in star quality and silverware, however, he makes up for in English football experience.

Carvalhal took now-third-tier Sheffield Wednesday to within 90 minutes of a Premier League promotion, after all, and did a respectable job at Swansea, even if his time at the Liberty Stadium did end in relegation.

And unlike for instance Amorim – the highly-rated Sporting Lisbon boss who would cost Wolves around £20 million in compensation fees – 56-year-old Carvalhal is also available right here, right now.

The Braga-born tactician was relieved of his duties by Al Wahda on Monday. The announcement came just hours after claims he was a target for the Molineux job, via Record. Coincidence or conspiracy?

“Al Wahda Football Club announces the dismissal of Portuguese coach Carlos Carvalhal,” they write. “Wishing him success during his upcoming stations.”

Al Wahda hammered Al Bataeh 4-0 on Sunday. That was not enough to keep the well-travelled Carvalhal in the job, however; a squad containing Adrien Silva, Joao Pedro and former Everton enforcer Allan stuck in mid-table with one win from four.

According to the Express and Star, Pedro Martins is currently one of the names high on Wolves’ radar. He too is out of work, dumped by Olympiakos despite winning three successive Greek Super League titles.

Martins is reportedly keen on the job, after recently turning down ambitious Hull City. He also worked with Molineux due Jose Sa and Daniel Podence at Olympiakos.

Wolves are currently 18th in the Premier League table. Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at a re-energised West Ham United was the final straw for the increasingly unpopular Bruno Lage.
