The Wolves and Mexico forward has been in great form for club and country this season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Raul Jimenez has put in yet another impressive performance for Mexico as they made it two wins out of two in Group A of the Gold Cup and all but qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition.
The Wolves ace bagged a brace as El Tri thrashed Cuba 7-0 in their opener and, though he did not score in the subsequent game against Canada, he nonetheless had a role in all of his side’s goals as they ran out 3-1 winners over Les Rouges (ESPN).
With five minutes left to go in the first half, Jimenez had a go at goal with a volley and even though Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan made a save, the ball bounced into the path of Roberto Alvarado, who hammered home on the rebound.
In the second half, Andres Guardado came off the bench and got two goals, with Jimenez involved in the build-up play, forcing a mistake from a Canadian defender which led to his teammate picking up possession and scoring his first, and flicking a header on to trigger the counter-attack for the second.
Even though Lucas Cavallini had grabbed a goal to make it 2-1 prior to Guardado’s second, the final result was never really in doubt – a victory for the Central Americans.
Jimenez’s exploits saw him awarded an 8 out of 10 by ESPN, and with one remaining match in the group stage, against Martinique this Sunday, it’s a case of so far so good for the Wanderers ace and his nation, who will surely fancy their chances of an eighth Gold Cup and second in three editions (BBC Sport).
With 13 goals and eight assists from 32 Premier League games and four goals from six FA Cup games (Transfermarkt), the 28-year-old striker has had a debut season to remember at Molineux and he will be hoping to cap it off with international glory too.
