David Edwards was one of Wolves’ best players last season but few are questioning the club’s decision to accept Reading’s £1m bid.
David Edwards can perhaps consider himself to be a victim of Wolves’ success.
The midfielder spent ten years at Molinuex after signing from Luton Town in an inspired deal all the way back in 2007. And in his final season for the club, 2016/17, Edwards even enjoyed the most prolific goalscoring run of his career, notching 10 times from central midfield.
But only a few months after that season ended, Wolves have barely thought about the long-serving former fans’ favourite.
Aided by the finances of their Chinese owners and the connections of Jorge Mendes, Wolves smashed the Championship transfer record to land Porto wonderkid Ruben Neves (below) and also brought in Alfred N’Diaye from Villarreal.
As such, there was no room at Molinuex for Edwards any more. So it was little surprise when Wolves let the 31-year-oldl leave for league rivals Reading, last season’s play-off finalists paying £1 million for the Welsh international, according to the Express and Star.
And while Edwards is in fine form for Reading right now, scoring in successive wins against Barnsley and Sunderland, it’s a real indication of how far Wolves have come that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side do not miss him one jot.
Wolves have built a side with a smattering of genuine Premier League quality, leaving some of the club’s most loyal servants, including Edwards and centre-back Danny Batth, falling down the pecking order.
Edwards is a proven and talented Championship player who continues to perform impressively at this level. But this ambitious and expensively-assembled Wolves side has left him behind.
