Wolves U23s are all but promoted to the top division of English reserve football after a 3-2 win over the Red Devils in Leigh.
Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-23s have all but sealed the Premier League 2 second division title after coming from two goals down to run out 3-2 winners over Manchester United on Friday night.
Leigh Sports Village played host to the Red Devils youngsters and their Wolves counterparts, and things went badly for the visitors at first as Ricky Sbragia’s charges surged into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes.
Lee O’Connor diverted into his own net 10 minutes from time to set up a tense finish before Niall Ennis levelled in the 88th minute and the incredible late turnaround was complete when Sadou Diallo scored in stoppage time to seal an exhilarating win.
The result means that, unless Southampton beat Sunderland by more than 12 goals on Monday, Rob Edwards’s side will be promoted to the Premier League 2’s top flight as champions – a remarkable achievement to go with that of the senior team in the past 18 months.
