Paulo Fonseca fancies the Wolves job as he finally seeks a Premier League move after missing out on the Newcastle and Tottenham jobs.

Wolves have parted ways with Portuguese boss Bruno Lage after a very disappointing start to the season.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham United proved to be the end for Lage, who was given his marching orders on Sunday.

The attention is already turning to which Portuguese manager will come in; Jorge Mendes has a big influence at Wolves, their last two managers have been Portuguese and 10 first-team squad members hail from Portugal.

Pedro Martins, Sergio Conceicao, Ruben Amorim, Vitor Pereira and Carlos Carvalhal have all been mentioned but there is another name to add in.

Paulo Fonseca fancies the Wolves job

90Min report that Lille boss Paulo Fonseca has shown an interest in taking the Wolves job as a replacement for Lage.

Fonseca, 49, only took the Lille job in June but may feel that this is the ideal chance to finally work in the Premier League.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk boss – who won three league titles in Ukraine before heading to Roma in 2019 – has been mentioned with a raft of Premier League jobs.

Tottenham targeted Fonseca to replace Jose Mourinho and the Portuguese boss claims a deal was agreed but Fabio Paratici changed his mind and picked Nuno Espirito Santo.

Fonseca then thought he was getting the Newcastle United job last year according to Guillem Balague, but that role went to Eddie Howe.

Fonseca also showed an interest in becoming Aston Villa boss but lost out to Steven Gerrard and he was even linked to Manchester United by the Daily Mail.

Here we are again with Fonseca being linked with a Premier League job but it feels unlikely that he will leave Lille just month after arriving.

The Mozambique-born boss has won four of his nine games in charge at Lille and will be keen to rebuild his reputation after a year out of the game.

Fonseca does make sense for Wolves given his ties to Mendes but we’re expecting him to at least see out the season with Lille rather than immediately chase a job in England again.
