Wolves’ hopes of picking up a victory away at Sheffield United on Wednesday night that would have sent them top of the Championship were dealt a significant early blow when Conor Coady was sent off during the early stages.

Just 15 minutes were on the clock when Coady was given his marching orders after pulling back Leon Clarke as the Blades striker was played through on goal.

And from there, United certainly made the most of their advantage, with Clarke scoring twice to deny Nuno Espirito Santo’s men the chance to go top and allowing Chris Wilder’s side to actually move above their opponents into the automatic-promotion spots.

So perhaps the defeat may have left Nuno wishing that he had had a different response when Sheffield United approached Wolves with a transfer bid back in the summer.

The Express and Star reported in early August that United had made a bid for the 24-year-old, who was previously on loan at Bramall Lane.

The bid was, of course, rejected and the early signs suggested that Coady – frequently used at centre-back since Nuno arrived at Molineux – was going to be a key player for the side. However, his more recent form has been slightly more underwhelming, and the manner of the red card against United may have left his manager wondering whether he definitely made the right call keeping him.
