Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Matt Doherty has spoken out about the one game this season in which he really found it difficult.

Surprisingly, the Premier League’s top six don’t feature – the 27-year-old referred to the 2-0 home defeat to Watford on October 20 last year.

That day at Molineux, Etienne Capoue and Roberto Pereyra scored quickfire goals midway through the first half to end Wolves’ six-game unbeaten run in the league.

A look at the stats from the game (Sky Sports) doesn’t suggest a huge disparity between the two sides on the day, but the 238-appearance stalwart made reference to the Hornets’ movement and how they were difficult to tackle.

Speaking to RTE about that day’s events, he said: “The movement they had was very hard to tackle that day. That was the one game really this season where I thought, ‘wow, that was really difficult’.”

After the end of that game, Watford leapfrogged Wolves into seventh place, edging one point ahead (BBC Sport), and both teams have remained in similar positions now, with Wanderers seventh and the Hornets eighth.

The two sides have to wait a while before they meet again, the reverse league fixture at Vicarage Road not taking place until April 27, but given how Wolves have kicked on since that defeat, they’ll be hoping for a much different outcome.
