Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly want to bring Croatian midfielder Josip Vukovic to the Premier League from Portuguese outfit Maritimo.
Now, we are not questioning the talent or potential of Josip Vukovic.
The Croatian midfielder (above, left) has been a roaring success at Primeira Liga outfit Maritimo since he arrived in Portugal from Olimpik Donetsk last summer. The tough-tackling enforcer has stood out in Iberia with his combative approach and work-rate off the ball.
What we are questioning, however, is why Wolverhampton Wanderers need him.
According to talkSPORT, Wolves have scouted Vukovic on a number of occasions this season with Leicester City, Watford and Chelsea also understood to be interested. The report adds that he could leave Maritimo for a bargain £4 million.
But WoIves are not short on midfielders. Nuno Espirito Santo can call upon Portuguese internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho, not to mention the dazzling Morgan Gibbs-White.
Romain Saiss, meanwhile, recently signed a long-term contract at Molineux and Leander Dendoncker has started to shine on loan from Anderlecht, meaning a permanent switch next summer looks like a formality.
There are certainly other areas of Wolves’ squad more in need of reinforcement. A new striker is a must while further depth at centre-half or right-wing back wouldn’t go amiss. Neither would an upgrade on the frustrating Helder Costa and Adama Traore.
Vukovic, then, feels like one midfielder too many.
