Signing Pizzi might not have been a bad idea from a Wolverhampton Wanderers perspective.
Calciomercato in Italy reported earlier this season that Wolves were interested in signing the Benfica dynamo during the January transfer window.
The 29-year-old, who can play in midfield or on the wings, never did wind up moving to Molineux or anywhere last month, and it remains to be seen whether Nuno Espirito Santo even wanted him.
But going by his most recent showing, it’s clear that he’s a fantastic player.
The Portugal international grabbed three assists and scored once as Benfica thumped Nacional 10-0 on Sunday.
Say what you want about Nacional, but this was a game in Portugal’s top-flight, and Sunday’s victims are 16th in a 18-team division.
In other words, Pizzi didn’t turn on the heat against a bunch of semi-pros or reserve players. He did it against top-flight, professional players and it’ll be interesting to see if Wolves renew any potential interest in the summer.
He has 13 assists and nine goals across all competitions this season and it’s obvious that Pizzi – managed by Jorge Mendes – is one of the best players in his country.
Should Nuno reunite him with a ton of his compatriots? If he continues to play like this, why not?
