Wolverhampton Wanderers have five points in Northern Group G after the Molineux side won on penalties last night.

A number of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have taken to Twitter to rejoice in the Under-21s penalty shootout victory over Morecambe in the EFL Trophy, the second time a Wolves team has won from spot kicks in the space of a week.

Rob Edwards’ charges broke the deadlock at the Globe Arena through Elliott Watt’s impressive free kick on 23 minutes, the 19-year-old skilfully curling his set piece around the wall from 20 yards out and into the back of the net.

However, the Shrimps equalised moments later as Andreas Sondergaard’s save from distance was converted on the rebound by Tom Brewitt, who was quickest to the follow up to rifle low past the Wolves keeper.

Austin Samuels then put Wolves back ahead just before the half-hour mark when he connected with Terry Taylor’s header to control, bear down on the Morecambe and firing past keeper Mark Halstead.

It wasn’t to be a straightforward win for Wanderers as Michael Howard reacted quickest from yards out after the ball came back off the bar to level in the latter stages of the game, but in the penalty shootout, Sondegaard saved Howard’s penalty and Carlos Mendes Gomes fired over the bar to give the visitors the win.

Here is some of the Wolves fan reaction on social media, with some fans referring to the penalty shootout over Reading in the League Cup last week too:

The result puts Wolves on five points – getting two for coming out on top on penalties in the game – in Northern Group G, after they ran out 4-2 winners at Carlisle United as well.
