Matt Doherty of Wolverhampton Wanderers celebrates after scoring a goal to make it 2-0 during the Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal FC at Molineux on April...

Wolverhampton Wanderers full-back Matt Doherty is hoping that the Republic of Ireland can make an impact in their Euro 2020 qualifying group in the same way that the Molineux side made an impact in the Premier League, as reported by the Evening Express.

The 27-year-old featured in every league game for Wolves last season, starting all but three (Transfermarkt), as Nuno Espirito Santo’s charges finished an impressive seventh in the table and, on top of that, impressed in the FA Cup by reaching the semi-finals.

Doherty has since joined up with his international teammates ahead of their Group D qualifiers against Denmark and Gibraltar and, with six points already picked up from narrow wins over Gibraltar and Georgia, he is confident they can go on and ‘do a Wolves’.

“Definitely,” Doherty is quoted by the Evening Express as saying. “We have obviously started off with six points out of six, and that is probably why Friday night is so important.

“If we can get a result going into Gibraltar, maybe have 10 or 12 points by the end of the summer, it goes a long way towards qualification, which is the end goal.”

Doherty joined fellow Ireland international Shane Duffy and manager Mick McCarthy at a press event at the Aviva Stadium earlier this week in collaboration with the official tailoring partners of the Football Association of Ireland.

The Wolves Twitter account could not resist giving their player a cheeky compliment and some of the Old Gold faithful also had their say:

After their game in Copenhagen on Friday night, the Republic will return to Dublin to face Gibraltar on Monday.
