Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings earned an England call, whilst Wolves’ Conor Coady missed out.
Wolves fans on Twitter have provided a mixed reaction to Paul Merson stating that he doesn’t understand why Conor Coady wasn’t called up by England, as he also claimed that Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings was ‘fortunate’ to get a call.
Coady has been playing in a back three for Wolves in recent seasons and Merson thinks that England need a player like him in their squad.
“Tyrone Mings is fortunate to make it in,” Meron told the Daily Star. “He’s only been in the Premier League two minutes. Mings is an athlete. He had a bad injury at Bournemouth but looks full of confidence now. He was a big part of Villa getting promoted and he won’t let you down. I’m pleased for him.
“But what’s Conor Coady done wrong at Wolves? He plays in a three, something England might need to do sometimes. He’s ready-made for that and I’m surprised he wasn’t called up.”
Whilst some sections of the Wolves support agree with Merson’s comments, others think that he’s not international standard.
Coady has been playing in a back three for two and a bit seasons now – the first time he guided Wolves to promotion and then they finished in the top-seven last term.
This time around, they have started off the season in an indifferent manner, as they are yet to pick up a win in the league as Nuno Espirito Santo tries to juggle Europa League and Premier League football.
Over the weekend, Mings was an unused substitute for England as Southgate opted to select Harry Maguire alongside Michael Keane at the heart of the defence.
They helped the Three Lions secure a deserved clean sheet as they comfortably beat Bulgaria 4-0, with Harry Kane netting a hat-trick.
During the last World Cup, Southgate played three at the back, but since then, he hasn’t gone back to that formation. But if he does then surely a player like Coady would earn an England call.
