A number of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have taken to Twitter to express sadness at the news that academy prodigy Meritan Shabani suffered an ACL injury in the League Cup win over Reading in midweek, and to wish him all the best in his recovery.

The 20-year-old, who signed for Wolves from Bayern Munich in the summer, went down holding his knee just over 10 minutes into his senior debut for the Molineux club, having impressed for the Under-23s in the early part of the 2019-20 season.

Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed the injury news with the media at his pre-match press conference, telling the club’s media team: “Shabani unfortunately had a serious injury to his knee, so he’s going to be out for a long time. It’s an ACL, he had a problem with his ligaments. It’s a tough injury, but he’s a young boy and strong boy and will come through and come back stronger.”

Here is some of the social media reaction from Wolves fans to Shabani’s unfortunate injury:

As reported by the Wolves website at the time of his Molineux arrival, Shabani signed a three-year contract at Molineux in the summer after having risen through the Bayern academy system over the previous 13 years.

The attacking midfielder had made his first-team debut for the Bundesliga giants in April 2018 in a 4-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and featured against the same opposition in the Bundesliga last season.

On the deal, Wolves sporting director Kevin Thelwell said: “He’s a player we’ve been watching for a long time… our scouting teams have been watching him regularly. He’s a really talented individual, who is very excited. He has huge potential to assist and score goals, and very pleasing on the eye in terms of his movement.”
