Wolverhampton Wanderers were in talks to bring Rubin Kazan striker Azmoun to the Premier League last month.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ bid to sign Iranian striker Serdar Azmoun collapsed on transfer deadline day, according to Sky Sports – and the fans have been left divided by the news.
It was claimed that Wolves had agreed a loan fee of £1.7 million with the centre-forward’s current club, Rubin Kazan, but the deal fell through at the eleventh hour.
Wolves wanted an option to sign Azmoun permanently in the summer for £11.5 million should he impress at Molineux. The complications arose, however, because Rubin wanted the deal to include an ‘obligation’ for a permanent transfer – regardless of how he gets on in English football.

Now, there are those who are claiming this is a bullet dodged. After all, Azmoun is something of an unknown quantity, a player who has scored just four league goals for Rubin Kazan all season.
But those who know Azmoun know what a bargain he could have been. There is a reason why he has long been called ‘the Iranian Messi’, after all.
He is a big-game player, a Champions League goalscorer against Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich, and only enhanced his reputation with four goals in six games at this year’s Asian Cup.

Wolves’ failure to get the deal done, coupled with Leo Bonatini’s move to Nottingham Forest, leaves Raul Jimenez as their only striking option.
