Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in AC Milan stalwart Ignazio Abate ahead of a potential summer swoop to land the right-back – and fans have reacted on Twitter in excited fashion.

Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport claim Wolves are considering a move for the 31-year-old, in somewhat of an ambitious move that would see the newly-promoted Premier League side sign a player with 22 Italy caps.

However, Abate could be on the transfer list at the San Siro this summer, with only a year remaining on the experienced star’s current deal at his boyhood club.

Abate left Milan in 2008 after making his debut with the club under Carlo Ancelotti five years earlier, but instantly returned to Milan in the summer of 2009 after a season with Torino. He has clocked up 282 appearances for the Italian giants.

Renowned for his speed and willingness to get forward, while remaining defensively astute at the back, Abate would be a major Wolves coup this summer if they can indeed pen his signature.

With Abate’s future in doubt, MLS clubs are also said to be keeping tabs on the defender but Wolves fans are desperate to see their club land the Italian this summer. One fan urged his club to “snap him up”.
