Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Matt Doherty has taken to Twitter with a post-match message after the Molineux side ran out 4-0 winners over Pyunik in Thursday’s Europa League third qualifying round first leg in Yerevan.
The Republic of Ireland international opened the scoring in the capital of Armenia just before the half-hour mark when he was played in by Joao Moutinho and, in yards of space, slotted into the far corner of the hosts’ net.
Raul Jimenez added a second just before the break and the outcome of the game was all but settled not long after the restart, when the Mexico Gold Cup winner finished off when one-on-one with Andrija Dragojevic.
In injury time, Ruben Neves added a fourth from the penalty spot, putting Wolves in control of the tie and heading back to the UK – a 6,370-mile round-trip – in pole position to reach the next round.
Doherty, who only began training again this week after a knee injury disrupted his pre-season preparations, wrote the following message on social media:
Some Wolves fans responded by congratulating him for his display and celebrating his return to fitness:
Wolves will look to complete the job next Thursday in the second leg at Molineux and move into a play-off against Torino or Shakhtyor, the Italians leading 5-0 after the first leg.
