Ruben Neves staked a very strong claim for goal of the season in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2-0 win over Derby County at Molineux last night.
The Portuguese schemer gathered possession after Derby cleared a corner, before flicking the ball up and rifling a stunning volley past Scott Carson from all of 30 yards.
Like every Wolves fan behind the goal, and indeed everybody who saw it, striker Benik Afobe could not believe what he had seen.
The 25-year-old, on loan in the West Midlands but valued at £10 million by parent club Bournemouth [Birmingham Mail], placed one hand on his head and another over his mouth in sheer disbelief.
And in addition to the quality of the goal, Wolves fans on Twitter were all talking about how Afobe’s reaction just summed it up.
Consequence of the win, Wanderers established a 12-point cushion in the automatic promotion places and, with only 12 points left on offer, they will almost certainly be playing in the Premier League next term.
And when manager Nuno Espirito Santo has a player that talented, there is already a sense that Neves-inspired Wolves could do big things on their return to the top flight.
