Doherty admitted he didn’t know anything about the Magpies record signing and said he is sure Wolves will be able to cope with him.

Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Matt Doherty has issued Newcastle United with a warning ahead of Monday night’s Premier League clash at Molineux – but one with the potential to backfire.

The West Midlanders are currently on a warm-weather training camp following their FA Cup fourth-round replay win over Shrewsbury and will go into next week’s encounter hoping to make it four top-flight wins in a row.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have two wins from their last five Premier League games, which sounds worse than it is given four of these five were against Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City (which they beat) and Tottenham Hotspur.

On January transfer deadline day, the Magpies broke their club record to sign Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron, having seen him hit 13 goals and 13 assists for Atlanta United last season, helping them win the MLS Cup.

Although an exciting signing which has boosted the Toon Army’s morale following a difficult January, Doherty did not appear concerned about Almiron potentially making his English football bow at Molineux – in fact he appeared somewhat dismissive.

“I don’t know anything (about Almiron),” Doherty told the Birmingham Mail. “I don’t watch much of the MLS. We will have to watch clips. But we have our own game and they will have to watch us.

“He is playing for Newcastle so he is obviously a good player but in the Premier League there is many good players and you expect everybody to have something up their sleeve so I am sure we will be able to cope with it.”

There are ways and ways of discussing opponents ahead of a game, and such comments about Newcastle and their new player aren’t likely to go down well among the fans and especially the players, who will surely be now doing extra research to ensure Wolves will have wished they’d done a bit more homework on Almiron.

New Newcastle United signing, Miguel Almiron, is introduced to the media at St. James Park on February 07, 2019 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
