Wolves cashing in on Reading’s Jon Dadi Bodvarsson looks an excellent decision

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson already appears to have lost the trust of Jaap Stam at Reading – meaning Wolverhampton Wanderers may not regret letting him go.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ decision to sell Jon Dadi Bodvarsson to Championship rivals Reading left Nuno Espirito Santo with just one senior centre-forward to rely on between now and the January transfer window.

Nonetheless, the Icelandic international’s inability to make a real impact with The Royals mean few Wolves fans will be lamenting the decision so far.

While the 6ft 2ins centre-forward does give Jaap Stam’s side a much needed physical presence and an outlet up top, doubts remain about whether or not Bodvarsson is a natural fit in a side renowned for their patience and passing philosophy.

Bodvarsson’s tally of two goals in six appearances is hardly a disaster but, since being subbed at half-time in the draw with Brentford midway through last month, the targetman has not started a single Championship game.

And this speaks volumes about how highly Stam rates him.

Consequently, Wolves’ decision to cash in after just one season in English football is looking a good one. An Icelandic hero after helping one of the smallest national teams on the continent reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, Bodvarsson’s reputation in Wolves a little more modest after he scored just three goals in 42 Championship games last season.

And while the former Kaiserslautern striker should have no trouble beating that tally this time around, it’s difficult to see how he would have fit into a Wolves attack blessed with pace, creativity and skill on the ball.
