Wolves boss Paul Lambert in ambitious play-off claim

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Paul Lambert has expressed his aims for the remainder of the season.

Speaking ahead of Wolves’ clash with midlands rivals Birmingham City this evening, Lambert refused to give up on reaching the much coveted Championship play-off positions at the culmination of the season – despite currently languishing in 19th position, five points from the relegation zone.

In his pre-game press conference, Lambert explained that “If we [Wolves] go on a run, then I won’t give up the play-offs, I won’t give it up. We will certainly try and go for it and, 45 points, it’s a big, big chunk of points.” (Sky Sports News, 08:45, 24/02/107)

The Molineux outfit has experienced somewhat of an inconsistent campaign thus far, including the hiring and firing of Italian Walter Zenga, several signings funded by Chinese owners Fosun International, and the appointment of current boss Lambert – who certainly seems to be looking forward towards progress rather than over his shoulder at a potential relegation battle.

Nevertheless, Lambert and Wolves will need to navigate a Birmingham City side determined to rectify their own recent poor form – which has seen the Blues secure just six points from a possible 36 since hiring Gianfranco Zola in December.

At his pre-game press conference, Lambert emphasised the relevance of this evening’s midlands’ derby clash, whilst also indicating his determination to deny Birmingham, and their under-fire manager Zola, any of the spoils against his Wolves side.

When speaking of the encounter (Sky Sports News, 08:46, 24/02/107), Lambert reiterated: “It’s important for me, the club and the supporters – I think it’s vital.

“Any derby you play, it doesn’t matter who’s sitting in the league top, middle or bottom, a derby game’s a derby game. The atmosphere will be fantastic, but that’s what you’d expect.”

“I know Gianfranco’s having a hard time…he’s doing his best, he’s trying to get a result – we have to make sure that they don’t come here and get anything.”
