Lambert has a difficult job if he is to match the ambitions of the owners, but he could certainly get the fans onside by giving youth a chance.
Wolves boss Paul Lambert has insisted to the Express and Star that he is keeping an eye on a number of young talents in his squad, and raved about their 4-0 Checkatrade Trophy win against Accrington Stanley last week.
Lambert replaced Walter Zenga at the helm earlier this month, inheriting a talented squad boosted by an array of overseas arrivals, including club-record signing Ivan Cavaleiro and the impressive attacker Helder Costa (below).
However, while Wolves’ senior squad has often flattered to deceive since being taken over by Chinese conglomeration Fosun, who had pledged to return the ‘Old Gold’ to the Premier League sooner rather than later, their youngsters have impressed in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The likes of Bright Enobakhare and Connor Ronan are both highly regarded within the walls of Molineux and only added to the excitement surrounding their potential by netting in the Under-23s thrashing of an almost full-strength Accrington.
Consequently, reserve boss Scott Sellers said after the game that he hoped Lambert would be keeping an eye on the club’s next generation, and the Scot has now confirmed that is the case.
“They were excellent,” the former Aston Villa boss told the Express and Star. “I’m keeping an eye on them and I was really pleased with them.
“I don’t want to name names but there are some top kids in there. It’s important they stay on the right path, but if they keep performing the way they are then I’ll be really pleased – there’s a lot of talent.”
And, unless Lambert sees a dramatic improvement from the senior squad in the coming weeks, these young stars may well see their development accelerate rapidly in the coming months.
