Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Walter Zenga has explained via the Express & Star why he is delaying the debuts of summer signings Ola John and Romain Saiss.

The pair, along with Portuguese full-back Silvio and stand-in keepers Andy Lonergan and Jack Ruddy, are the only new recruits out of 13 not to have made an appearance under Zenga’s regime.

When asked about those sidelined so far, the Italian replied, as quoted by the Express & Star: “If you’re asking me about Ola John I ask you, who stay out? If I don’t choose some players there are a reason.

“He arrived in the last part of the transfer window. And the last game he played was in May. Saiss, when he arrived, had one knee not in the right way.

“We are not stupid that we don’t use the players if we buy them. When they’re ready they’re going to play, 100 per cent.”

Both John and Saiss arrived at Molineux with sizable reputations, with the former, who signed on loan from Portuguese champions Benfica, capped by Holland in 2013 and the latter, a Moroccan international, reportedly courted by Barcelona in January (Sport).

However, Wolves’ recent run of poor form – two defeats and a draw from their last three league matches – could see the pair handed opportunities in the coming weeks.

Zenga’s side, who took eight points from their opening four league matches, go into Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United six points and 14 places behind their opponents.

The former Italy goalkeeper is a new arrival himself, having replaced Kenny Jackett in late July.
