Wolverhampton Wanderers head to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa in the Championship this evening.
Wolves ace Matt Doherty spoke exclusively to the Express & Star, ahead of his side’s clash with Aston Villa this evening, and took a swipe at the west Midlands outfit after their criticism of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side for their links with Jorge Mendes.
The Black Country outfit currently sit comfortably at the top of the Championship table, six points clear of second placed Cardiff City, and a further four ahead of Steve Bruce’s Villa side.
The outcome of this evening’s clash between Villa and Wolves will have huge ramifications concerning the race for automatic promotion, and Villa, amongst other clubs, have been trying to destabilise Nuno’s side’s campaign by questioning whether the links between the club and super agent Jorge Mendes are legal.
Doherty, though, insisted that any kind of tactic used by other teams to disrupt Wolves will not work, when speaking exclusively to the Express & Star:
“To be honest we don’t see that much of it. I’ll go online and see something like that and some of us will have a little chat about it but we just think it’s teams with sour grapes looking in and thinking how can we disrupt the way they’re playing and get into our heads. It’s just not going to work that way. If anything it will probably make us want it even more, if that’s possible.”
Villa are on a fine tun of form, having lost just one league game since Boxing Day, so Wolves will have to be at their best, if they are take maximum points from Bruce’s side.
Nuno’s men will surely be buoyed by recent criticism from other clubs in the Championship, though, and it would be no surprise to see them return to the Black Country with three points safely tucked away.
