Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Fernando Marcal has dropped a hint about his future at the Premier League club by expressing his admiration for Botafogo on his official Instagram account.
Amid all the uncertainty surrounding Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Adama Traore and even Romain Saiss at Molineux, doubts over Marcal continue to fly somewhat under the radar.
The former Lyon defender, a £2 million signing in the summer of 2020, will be a free-agent in July. But not for long.
If reports are to be believed, Marcal has already agreed a deal that will see the veteran Brazilian return to his South American homeland and link up with PSV Eindhoven star Eran Zahavi at newly-promoted Botafogo.
“I think the (summer) transfer window is very important,” explained Botafogo’s majority shareholder, John Textor, a couple of weeks ago. “A lot of what we want – successful athletes – are with teams that don’t want to let them go mid-season
“We did a good job of finding available players. Zahavi is one example. Marcal of Wolves is another.”
Is Fernando Marcal leaving Wolves?
Marcal is yet to break his silence, though the 33-year-old has dropped a couple of clues about where his future may lie.
Shortly after posting a photo with former Lyon team-mate and Botafogo defender Rafael da Silva, Marcal made his admiration known following Botafogo’s 96th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Atletico Goianiense on Sunday.

Marcal has made 18 Premier League appearances in 2021/22. But Wolves look well stocked at left-back, even if the former Gremio and Benfica man does depart.

In Rayan Ait-Nouri, Bruno Lage has one of Europe’s most exciting young full-backs. Jonny Castro Otto is also equally comfortable on the left as he is on the right.
And that’s without mentioning Ryan Giles. The academy graduate will return to his parent club after an impressive season on loan in the Championship.
