Fernando Marcal is leaving Wolves and has already bought a house in Brazil as he prepares to swap the Premier League for Botafogo, journalist Thiago Franklin reports on his official Twitter account.

With doubts swirling around the futures of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Romain Saiss and Adama Traore at Molineux, the uncertainty surrounding Marcal continues to fly somewhat under the radar.

Though official confirmation has not yet arrived, all the signs suggest that a defender signed from Lyon in the summer of 2020 is entering his final few weeks as a Wolves player.

Marcal’s contract expires on July 1st. And while The Athletic believe that his departure is not cut and dry – Bruno Lage remains a big fan of a man who’s started 17 Premier League games this term – many in South America are convinced that the 33-year-old will be reunited with close friend and former Lyon team-mate Rafael da Silva in the Brazilian top-flight sooner rather than later.

Botafogo’s majority shareholder confirmed his interest in Marcal last month after all.

“We did a good job of finding available players,” says John Textor, who is also a co-owner at Crystal Palace. “(PSV Eindhoven star) Eran Zahavi is one example. Marcal of Wolves is another.”

Is Fernando Marcal leaving Wolves?

Globo Esporte, meanwhile, say that a deal to bring the former Gremio man back home has been agreed already. And Franklin, a respected football reporter on the other side of the Atlantic, backs up those claims.

Botafogo, he says, expect Marcal to start training with the club from June onwards.

What’s more, the former Besiktas and Benfica man has already bought a house in Rio de Janeiro, with newly-promoted Botafogo based in Brazil’s second-most populous city.

Marcal out, Ryan Giles in at Wolves?

Marcal leaving Wolves may open the door for Ryan Giles to force his way into Bruno Lage’s first-team plans. The Telford-born academy graduate has shone on loan at Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers – providing ten assists in 2021/22 – and Wolves are understood to be ‘delighted’ with his progress.
