Wolverhampton Wanderers produced a magnificent display in the third round of the FA Cup.
Wolves full-back Matt Doherty scored his side’s second goal during their 2-0 win away at Stoke City in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday, and he spoke to reporters after the game about how surprised he was at being given the opportunity to take the the free-kick, which he subsequently scored from, as quoted by the Express & Star.
The result was a timely boost for Paul Lambert’s men, who have struggled during the first half of their Championship campaign, and they will now be hoping to kick on, and force themselves into promotion play-off contention over the next few months.

The 24-year-old Irishman has been ever present for his side so far this term, appearing in all 25 of their league games, and had already scored three goals before his side’s cup tie at the BET365 Stadium on Saturday.
And he discussed his fine goal with reporters, admitting that he was shocked that he was actually allowed to take the free-kick, as quoted by the Express & Star:
“I haven’t been on free kicks for years. We did some set-pieces in training and I said I’ll take one and I put it right in the top corner. I went over there trying to get it but I didn’t expecting the boys to actually give it to me. I wasn’t meant to be on free-kicks but I just ran over and asked to take it.”

The key for Wolves now will be to try and carry their momentum into the league, and embark on a sustained run of victories that would bring them back into play-off contention.
They are only 13 points adrift of sixth placed Sheffield Wednesday, and in a division as tight as the Championship, a four or five game win streak would see Lambert’s men fly up the table.
