Kevin McDonald has been deployed as a defensive midfielder for Wolverhampton Wanderers recently.
Kevin McDonald has told the Express and Star that he is still adapting to the new role that Kenny Jackett has given him at Wolverhampton Wanderers this season.
McDonald has been moved into a slightly more defensive position in midfield more recently, with Jackett looking to protect his side’s backline.
The former Sheffield United man admits his main aim is now to help out the defence, but he still wants to get forward and help create chances for others.
“I’m in a deeper role just now so the sort of passes I played to Benik last season are going to be more rare at the moment,” the central midfielder said. “But when I do get the chance I am going to try and play it and create goals.
“My main job at the moment is protecting the defence and it is all about that.
“We are trying to keep clean sheets and get wins and I am a big part of the defensive side of things.
“I had a shot at Reading which was over and getting those in will also be more rare.
“But I am happy to have a go when I get into the right position.
“I am always delighted to score and will try and do that but if not then still create for the more attacking players in the side to score goals.”
McDonald was one of Wolves’ major creative influences last season, when Jackett’s side played a more attacking brand of football.
However, they have had to be more cautious in their approach this time around, as their leaky defence was letting them down in the early part of the campaign.
Wolves have struggled to live up to expectations this season, and Jackett has had to make a number of alterations to try and find a winning formula.
The Midlands side are currently in 11th place in the Championship table, and they are 10 points back from the play off places.
