Matheus Nunes is joining Wolverhampton Wanderers as links with the likes of Liverpool and West Ham United can finally end.

It has been a tricky summer for Wolves, who have been calculated with their money by signing Nathan Collins and Goncalo Guedes.

Wolves haven’t been throwing money around and have allowed Romain Saiss and Conor Coady to leave the club this summer.

Fans have been calling for more investment into the playing squad and it looks like a major deal is on the verge of completion.

Matheus Nunes is joining Wolverhampton Wanderers

Portuguese newspaper Record report that Wolves have closed a deal ‘in the last few hours’ for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

It’s claimed that Nunes has agreed to join Wolves having previously been unconvinced, with Bruno Lage ultimately insistent that he joined.

A deal has now been agreed between the two clubs with Wolves paying €45million plus €5million in add-ons (£38million plus £4million).

That’s a huge outlay for Wolves, especially just over a week since paying a big fee to secure Valencia winger Guedes too.

It’s stated that West Ham United have made an offer in the last week, offering to pay €30million plus €5million in add-ons (£25million plus £4million), but that wasn’t enough.

David Moyes has also claimed that Nunes decided he didn’t want to join West Ham.

Just days later, Nunes appears set to join another Premier League club and it’s Wolves rather than Liverpool.

Reports from Portugal in July suggested that Liverpool were very interested in bringing Nunes to Anfield.

After raiding Porto for Luis Diaz and Benfica for Darwin Nunez, the idea of taking Nunes away from Sporting didn’t seem all that crazy.

Add in that Thiago has just picked up an injury and that Liverpool do need fresh energy in midfield and Nunes seemed like a sensible target.

Instead though, Wolves appear to have won the race for Nunes and will hope to have him snapped up ahead of facing Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this weekend.
