Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty and Everton’s Seamus Coleman are currently on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.
Wolves defender Matt Doherty has played down his conversations with Everton’s Seamus Coleman by insisting they have not been about ‘form’.
The right-back duo are currently on international duty with the Republic of Ireland and are battling for one spot in Mick McCarthy’s starting XI ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifiers.
On the domestic front, the more experienced Coleman is enduring an indifferent campaign with the Toffees, whilst his counterpart is flying high at Molineux.
Ahead of the international fixtures, Doherty shared that he has ‘spoken a lot’ with Coleman, but was adamant that it was just about general stuff and not about what they have been producing on the field of play.
“We have obviously spoken a lot,” said Doherty, as posted by Off The Ball. “But we have not spoken about form or anything like that, we just speak about normal football things
“And no it’s not a case of ‘oh, I’m playing, how are you playing? How was your game on Saturday? Or did I play better than you or anything like that, no’. We are quite friendly, so it’s just general football talk.”
In club football, McCarthy has previously opted to play a flat back four and it is likely he will continue that trend as he looks to make his second managerial debut for the Irish.
He has a decision to make on the right-hand side, with the in-form Doherty hoping to get the nod ahead of Coleman, but the former can play further forward if need be.
At club level, Doherty has played a right wing-back role for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, so there isn’t any reason why he can’t play further forward on the right flank, especially when there isn’t any standout names.
Either way, Doherty, who has helped Wolves to seventh in the Premier League table and the semi-final of the FA Cup, will be hoping to take that form onto the international level.
